### Capturing the Spirit of Sakela: A Day at United Gurkha Academy<\/p>\n

During my ongoing documentation project, *The Boys of the Blue City*, I had the pleasure of connecting with Leo Bidhan. He extended an invitation for me to witness the *Sakela* festivities hosted at his school, the United Gurkha Academy. Following a brief meeting with the school\u2019s administration to secure permission, I was granted access to wander through the classrooms and campus grounds to document the day\u2019s events.<\/p>\n
#### A Lens into Youthful Curiosity
\nAs soon as I produced my camera, the atmosphere shifted. The students were immediately drawn to the equipment, their eyes wide with wonder. Within moments, a queue had formed; every child was eager to have their portrait captured, turning the schoolyard into an impromptu studio.<\/p>\n
The energy was infectious. Interacting with the *bhais* (younger brothers) and *bahinis* (younger sisters) was effortless. They were far from camera-shy, instead competing playfully for my attention and cheering each other on as they waited for their turn in front of the lens.<\/p>\n
#### Understanding the Significance of Sakela
\nSakela serves as a cornerstone of the Kirat Rai community\u2019s cultural identity. It is a vibrant celebration deeply rooted in the worship of nature, expressed through rhythmic dance, traditional music, and communal rituals. <\/p>\n
In the context of Dharan, Sakela acts as a powerful social glue. It transcends caste boundaries, fostering a sense of unity and harmony across the city\u2019s diverse population. By bringing people together to celebrate their shared heritage, the festival reinforces the bonds of friendship and collective identity that define the region.<\/p>\n
According to recent cultural surveys, festivals like Sakela are vital for maintaining social cohesion in urbanizing areas, as they provide a platform for younger generations to engage with their ancestral traditions in a modern educational setting.<\/p>\n
