A Chilling Vision of a Scorched Berlin

The shadows have long been a sanctuary, but in the sweltering, dystopian landscape of the upcoming Hulu original City of Blood, darkness might be the only thing left to fear. This German sci-fi horror production, slated for a global streaming debut this September, offers a grim look at a future where environmental collapse has fundamentally altered the social hierarchy.

From Graphic Novel to Screen

Adapted from the acclaimed German graphic novel “Berlinoir,” the series reimagines the German capital as a fractured city-state. The narrative centers on a stark divide: a wealthy elite residing within the safety of a climate-regulated dome, while the remainder of the population battles extreme temperatures, systemic corruption, and rampant lawlessness. Much like the class-based tension seen in films like Elysium or Snowpiercer, City of Blood uses its setting to explore the desperation of those left behind by progress.

The Currency of Survival

The plot thickens when estranged sisters Bea and Phoebe cross paths again, only to stumble upon a terrifying conspiracy. In this version of Berlin, vampires are no longer just creatures of folklore; they are calculated political actors maneuvering to seize control of the city. In a world where resources are scarce, blood has been commodified, becoming the most valuable currency in the underground economy.

As the sisters navigate this treacherous landscape, they are forced to weigh the morality of their choices against the backdrop of a power struggle between human factions and the undead. The series poses a haunting inquiry: in a society already pushed to the brink of extinction, is the true monster the predator in the shadows or the human greed that paved the way for them?

Cast and Production

The series features a robust ensemble cast, including Lea Drinda, Soma Pysall, Franz Hartwig, Jördis Triebel, David Schütter, Mouataz Alshaltouh, Jenny Schily, Dagmar Manzel, Melika Foroutan, and Jan Georg Schütte. With the global rise in popularity of international genre television-a market that has seen a 30% increase in viewership for non-English language sci-fi since 2023-City of Blood is positioned to be one of the most anticipated genre releases of the year.
