Modern smart televisions are marketed as the centerpiece of the home entertainment experience, but a recent, exhaustive investigation suggests they may also be acting as uninvited guests. A collaborative deep dive led by the tech media outlet Gamers Nexus-involving over 500 hours of testing and a $70,000 investment-has uncovered unsettling behaviors in LG smart TVs that go far beyond simple streaming.

The investigation, conducted alongside Level1Techs and a team of independent cybersecurity experts, revealed that LG sets actively probe the user’s local Wi-Fi environment. By leveraging Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), these televisions systematically map every other device connected to the network, including personal laptops, smartphones, and other IoT hardware.

This behavior is particularly concerning because it occurs without the user’s explicit knowledge or permission. Rather than acting as a passive display, the TV functions as a network scanner, cataloging the digital footprint of your entire household.

Perhaps most alarming is the discovery regarding microphone activity. The research team successfully intercepted clear audio recordings from an LG television even while the screen was powered down. This challenges the common assumption that a “turned off” device is a dormant one.

These findings align with broader industry concerns regarding data harvesting. In fact, the issue of unauthorized data collection has already reached legal thresholds; in May, LG reached a settlement with Texas regulators, committing to cease the collection of viewing habits without obtaining clear, informed consent from the consumer.

Beyond data collection, the researchers identified significant technical flaws that could leave homeowners exposed. The investigation highlighted: As smart home devices become increasingly ubiquitous, the “always-on” nature of these products creates a new frontier for privacy risks. While manufacturers often cite “service optimization” as the reason for such data collection, the presence of residential proxy software and unauthorized network scanning suggests that the trade-off for convenience may be far steeper than most consumers realize.

Myriad: Who will top Spotify in 2026? Security Vulnerabilities and Residential Proxies

* Unpatched Remote-Access Flaws: Vulnerabilities that could potentially allow unauthorized third parties to gain control over the device.

* Residential Proxy Integration: The presence of code designed to reroute external internet traffic through the user’s home connection. Essentially, this turns your television into a node for a proxy network, allowing strangers to mask their online activity using your residential IP address.
