Since its debut in 2001, *Donnie Darko* has evolved from a modest indie release into a cornerstone of modern cult cinema. Much like the slow-burn success of films such as *The Rocky Horror Picture Show* or *Blade Runner*, Kelly’s debut feature didn’t rely on a massive opening weekend. Instead, it cultivated a dedicated following through home video and late-night screenings, eventually becoming a cultural touchstone for its surreal exploration of existential dread, time travel, and suburban alienation.

This isn’t just a standard screening. The event is a collaborative effort between Saga Arts and the American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre. Attendees will be treated to an exclusive, pre-recorded introduction by writer-director Richard Kelly. In this segment, Kelly reflects on the film’s quarter-century journey, discussing how the story of a boy and his giant, ominous rabbit has managed to remain relevant and intellectually stimulating for two and a half decades.

The 4K restoration promises to bring a new level of visual clarity to the film’s moody, atmospheric cinematography, allowing both long-time devotees and first-time viewers to experience the haunting visuals of the Darko universe in a way that was impossible during its original 2001 run.
