For many digital reading enthusiasts, the primary drawback of Xteink e-readers has long been their restrictive software ecosystem. Historically, these devices were tethered to a closed Linux-based operating system, forcing users to rely exclusively on DRM-free EPUB files. This limitation often made the hardware feel like a walled garden, preventing users from accessing their existing libraries on major platforms.

However, the landscape is shifting. Recent reports from Good E-reader indicate that the company is finally pivoting toward a more versatile approach by introducing an Android-powered device.

The transition to a more open platform was first spotted by observant RedNote users, who began reporting a surge of promotional content for the Xteink S4. This new iteration marks a significant departure from the brand’s legacy, as it operates on Android 11.

By adopting a mobile operating system, Xteink is effectively transforming its hardware from a simple document viewer into a multifunctional portal. Users are no longer confined to sideloading files; instead, they can now install third-party applications, granting them direct access to expansive ecosystems like Kindle and Kobo. This is a massive quality-of-life upgrade, similar to moving from a basic feature phone to a modern smartphone where app compatibility is the standard.

While the software has received a major overhaul, the physical hardware remains consistent with the design philosophy seen in the X4 model. The S4 maintains a compact, portable form factor that appeals to readers who prioritize pocketability.

Key technical specifications include:

The Arrival of the Xteink S4
