Following the massive success of his breakout horror hits, filmmaker Zach Cregger is officially pivoting toward the stars. His highly anticipated science fiction thriller, titled The Flood, has been locked in for a wide theatrical debut on August 11, 2028. This project marks a significant escalation in scale for the director, who is once again pulling triple duty by handling the screenplay, production, and directorial responsibilities.

The production received a major boost in star power with the announcement that Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence will headline the film. This casting news, officially verified by Variety on September 29, 2026, signals that the studio is positioning the film as a major tentpole release. Behind the scenes, the project is a collaborative effort between Amblin Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment, with industry veterans Roy Lee and Miri Yoon serving as producers. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have secured the distribution rights, ensuring a global footprint for the upcoming feature.

While the studio has maintained a tight lid on the specific narrative beats and the remainder of the ensemble cast, Cregger has begun to pull back the curtain on the film’s tonal DNA. In a recent conversation with Men’s Health, the director drew a fascinating parallel between his new work and Stanley Kubrick’s seminal classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Cregger was careful to clarify that he isn’t positioning his film as a direct rival to Kubrick’s legendary status. Instead, he is aiming to capture the same unsettling, existential dread that defined the 1968 masterpiece. By framing 2001 as a “thrilling horror movie about human nature,” Cregger suggests that The Flood will likely prioritize psychological tension and philosophical inquiry over traditional jump scares. Much like how the monolith in Kubrick’s film served as a catalyst for human evolution and terror, Cregger’s vision appears to be rooted in the idea that the most frightening aspects of the universe are those we cannot fully comprehend.

Jennifer Lawrence Joins the Project
