Inside the Mind of an NBA Champion: Meta’s Immersive Therapy Series

On September 29, Meta launched a groundbreaking docuseries titled Open Season on Draymond Green, now available for streaming via the Meta Quest TV app. This project marks a significant shift in how sports media utilizes virtual reality, moving beyond game highlights to offer an intimate look at the psychological landscape of a professional athlete.

A Clinical Perspective on Athletic Performance

The six-part series documents the journey of four-time NBA champion Draymond Green as he engages in candid therapy sessions with Dr. Carrie Hastings. Dr. Hastings brings a wealth of high-stakes experience to these conversations; beyond her private clinical work, she serves as the team psychologist for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams. Her expertise provides a unique lens through which viewers can examine the immense pressures inherent in elite professional sports.

Redefining Transparency in Sports Media

Open Season premiered with a clear focus on vulnerability. By placing the audience directly into the room, the series strips away the typical media filter, allowing for a raw exploration of Green’s personal history and cognitive patterns. To maintain ethical standards, the production explicitly confirms at the outset that Green provided full consent to record these sessions, acknowledging the departure from the traditional, strictly confidential nature of therapeutic practice.

The Future of VR Storytelling

Set against the high-intensity backdrop of the 2025-2026 NBA season, the series serves as a case study for the potential of immersive media. While traditional documentaries often rely on retrospective interviews, this VR experience captures the immediacy of self-reflection in real-time. As mental health awareness continues to grow in professional athletics-with recent studies suggesting that nearly 35% of elite athletes struggle with mental health issues-projects like this highlight how technology can bridge the gap between public perception and the private realities of sports icons.
