Warning: This analysis discusses major plot developments from the Season 1 finale of “Lanterns,” titled “Dirt and Stars.”

As anticipation builds for the “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow,” the narrative landscape of the new DC Universe is rapidly taking shape. While the core conflict between David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor remains the primary draw, the film is poised to serve as a massive crossover event. Recent developments confirm that Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will be stepping into this cinematic arena, and the conclusion of the “Lanterns” series provides the essential roadmap for his transition to the big screen.

The journey of John Stewart throughout the “Lanterns” series has been anything but linear. For much of the season, the narrative toyed with the audience’s expectations; specifically, Episode 5 famously subverted his traditional origin by having Stewart explicitly reject the Power Ring. This creative choice left viewers questioning whether he would ever embrace his destiny as a Green Lantern.

However, the season finale, “Dirt and Stars,” finally resolved this tension. By providing closure to the mystery surrounding the demise of Hal Jordan-a plot point that unmasked the culprit behind Kyle Chandler’s character’s death-the show cleared the path for Stewart’s ascension. With the mantle now fully accepted, Stewart is no longer a hesitant participant but a solidified member of the Corps, ready to project his influence into the wider DCU.

Integrating a cosmic powerhouse like John Stewart into a Superman-centric film is a strategic move that mirrors the interconnected storytelling seen in modern comic book adaptations. Much like how the Marvel Cinematic Universe utilized “Iron Man 2” to introduce Black Widow, “Man of Tomorrow” appears to be using Stewart to bridge the gap between Earth-bound threats and the interstellar stakes of the Green Lantern Corps. With the DCU aiming for a more cohesive shared universe, Stewart’s presence suggests that the threat facing Superman may require more than just brute strength-it may require the tactical, disciplined oversight that only a veteran Lantern can provide.

The Expanding Horizon of the DCU
