The future of the Watch Dogs franchise has been a subject of intense speculation, especially as Ubisoft navigates a challenging period for its long-standing intellectual properties. While official corporate messaging remains guarded, whispers from industry insiders suggest that the publisher is quietly revisiting the series, potentially aiming for a second chance at success.

During a recent investor discussion, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot addressed the status of the series with a degree of ambiguity. When pressed on whether the franchise was currently in active development, Guillemot noted that the IP is not currently being prioritized within their creative studios, at least until a potential “remake” strategy is solidified.

While this statement was interpreted by many as a sign that the series had been shelved indefinitely, reports from Insider Gaming paint a different picture. Sources suggest that behind the scenes, Ubisoft is in the early stages of developing a remake of Watch Dogs Legion, aiming for a potential 2027 release window. This aligns with a broader industry trend where major publishers are looking to revitalize existing catalogs rather than risking capital on entirely new, unproven concepts.

At its core, the Watch Dogs series has always attempted to blend the open-world sandbox mechanics popularized by titles like Grand Theft Auto with a unique, tech-centric narrative. However, Watch Dogs Legion pushed this design philosophy to its absolute limit.

Unlike traditional action games that rely on a singular protagonist, Legion introduced a “play as anyone” mechanic. This system allowed players to recruit virtually any NPC found within the game’s digital recreation of London. By completing specific tasks or demonstrating the value of the DedSec resistance movement, players could flip enemies and civilians alike to their cause. It was a bold, systemic experiment that aimed to make the world feel truly reactive.

When it originally launched, Watch Dogs Legion faced a polarized reception. Critics were divided; some praised the technical ambition of the recruitment system, while others argued that the lack of a central, grounded protagonist made the storytelling feel disjointed and shallow.

With the gaming landscape shifting toward more refined, narrative-driven experiences, a remake could provide Ubisoft the opportunity to polish the rough edges of the original design. By tightening the recruitment loops and deepening the emotional stakes of the DedSec narrative, a 2027 iteration could finally deliver on the promise that the original title struggled to fully realize. Whether this project will successfully revitalize the brand remains to be seen, but it is clear that Ubisoft isn’t ready to disconnect from the Watch Dogs universe just yet.

Decoding Ubisoft’s Stance on the Franchise
