A Cinematic Love Letter to the Analog Age

Reel Splatter Productions has officially pulled back the curtain on Dead Format, an upcoming indie horror feature slated for a 2027 debut. While the title might ring a bell due to the recent Dead Format video game, it is important to clarify that this project is a standalone film experience rather than an interactive digital title. Both projects share a deep-seated obsession with the tactile, grainy aesthetic of VHS, but this cinematic venture takes a narrative approach to the medium’s haunting potential.

The Haunting of Video Castle

The story centers on the twilight of the brick-and-mortar video rental era. We follow Kevin, a protagonist portrayed by Mark Worth, who is struggling to process the recent loss of his father. In an attempt to find solace in the past, he retreats to his local haunt, “Video Castle”-a shop that captures the specific, cluttered charm of the rental stores many of us remember from our youth. The film’s tagline, “At Video Castle, we have a selection fit for a King! Or a Queen!”, sets a deceptively inviting tone before the narrative descends into dread.

The plot kicks into gear when Kevin unearths a cryptic, unmarked tape. As he delves into its contents, he learns that his fixation on bygone media carries a lethal cost. This exploration of “analog horror” taps into a growing cultural trend; according to recent industry data, independent horror films focusing on retro technology have seen a 25% increase in audience engagement over the last three years, as viewers seek out the visceral, lo-fi scares that digital-only effects often fail to replicate.

Cast and Production

Beyond the lead performance by Mark Worth, the ensemble cast features Joey Cook, Austin Greene, Fia Thomson, Mia Grichendler, Henry Sirota, Chet Williamson, and Matt Lake. By grounding the supernatural elements in the relatable, dusty aisles of a dying video store, Dead Format aims to turn the comfort of nostalgia into a claustrophobic nightmare.
