China’s Oscar Contender: A Closer Look at ‘Once Upon a Time in the Middle East’

The international cinematic landscape is buzzing as China officially unveils its selection for the upcoming Academy Awards: Once Upon a Time in the Middle East. Originally released in domestic markets this past August under the title Welcome to the Loong Restaurant, the film has already cemented its status as a massive commercial success. Well Go USA has now dropped the official domestic trailer, offering audiences a glimpse into this high-stakes drama.

A Heroic Chef Amidst Global Conflict

At the heart of the narrative is Xu Fu, portrayed by the iconic Shen Teng. The story unfolds in the fictional Middle Eastern metropolis of Bahata, where the protagonist manages a local eatery. The plot takes a dramatic turn when regional tensions escalate into full-scale warfare. Unlike traditional war epics that focus on soldiers, this film centers on a civilian’s moral imperative. When the city descends into chaos, Xu Fu pivots from serving meals to providing sanctuary, converting his establishment into a makeshift haven for displaced orphans.

Thematic Undertones and Cinematic Perspective

The film is being categorized as a poignant anti-war statement, though it carries a distinct geopolitical lens. The narrative positions the United States as the primary antagonist, reflecting a specific cultural and political viewpoint that has sparked significant discussion among global critics. Much like how films such as Life is Beautiful utilized a confined setting to highlight human resilience against overwhelming odds, Once Upon a Time in the Middle East uses the restaurant as a microcosm of the broader humanitarian crisis.

With the Academy Awards race heating up, this film represents a bold choice for China’s submission. By blending the star power of Shen Teng with a narrative that emphasizes self-sacrifice and community protection, the production aims to resonate with international audiences despite its controversial political framing. As the film prepares for its wider release, it remains to be seen how the Academy will respond to its unique blend of blockbuster spectacle and pointed social commentary.
