Published: 11:30 AM PDT · October 8, 2026 For those who find the intersection of high-stakes technology and chaotic corporate scandal irresistible, this autumn is shaping up to be a banner season. Beyond the highly anticipated Nathan Fielder-led exploration of the Elizabeth Holmes saga, viewers have another high-profile dramatization to look forward to. Netflix has officially slated the release of The Altruists for November 19, a series chronicling the meteoric rise and catastrophic collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, centered on the figures of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison.

The timing of the release is pointedly festive, arriving just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. It serves as a grim reminder of the financial wreckage left in the wake of the FTX implosion, which saw billions in customer assets vanish. As the industry continues to grapple with the fallout of the 2022 collapse-a period that saw Bitcoin prices plummet and regulatory scrutiny reach an all-time high-this series arrives as a cultural post-mortem of the “move fast and break things” ethos.

The production features Anthony Boyle stepping into the role of the disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, with Julia Garner portraying former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison. You can view the official trailer below:

[Insert Trailer Placeholder]

It is a surreal turn of events to see the philosophical underpinnings of “effective altruism”-a movement that once promised to optimize global charity through cold, hard logic-become the subject of a prestige television drama. The series aims to unpack how these intellectual frameworks were weaponized to justify the reckless mismanagement of investor funds.

Graham Moore, the show’s co-showrunner, expressed his awe regarding the source material during a recent press discussion. “The narratives surrounding Sam and Caroline are so inherently bizarre that they defy traditional screenwriting tropes,” Moore noted. “As a writer, I couldn’t have invented characters this complex or contradictory; their real-world actions are far more compelling than anything I could have scripted.”

The collapse of FTX remains one of the most significant cautionary tales in the history of digital finance. With the crypto market having undergone a volatile recovery since the 2022 crash, the public remains deeply invested in understanding how such a massive fraud was perpetrated under the guise of philanthropic innovation. By dramatizing the internal dynamics of Bankman-Fried’s inner circle, The Altruists promises to peel back the layers of a scandal that fundamentally altered the public’s trust in decentralized finance.
