The suspenseful new thriller Animals is set to make its debut in select cinemas and on Netflix starting October 9. This project marks another compelling entry in the directorial and acting career of Ben Affleck, who breathes new life into the traditional kidnapping narrative. By injecting a clever, high-stakes twist, the film forces both the characters and the audience to grapple with complex ethical dilemmas.

In the film, Affleck portrays Mark Kimball, a wealthy businessman mounting an independent bid for the Los Angeles mayoral seat. The timing of the release is particularly sharp, mirroring the real-world intensity of current LA political races. Kimball is crafted as the ultimate “unicorn” candidate: a veteran with a military background, a proponent of progressive policies, and a man who refuses corporate donations. His personal life-featuring a Black wife and a mixed-race son-combined with his ability to speak fluent Spanish, makes him a strategist’s fantasy. The movie is self-aware enough to lean into the cynicism surrounding such a “perfect” political persona.

The narrative unfolds during the final, frantic days leading up to a Halloween election. Despite Kimball’s relentless, self-financed campaign, he finds himself trailing in the polls. The pressure is immense; if he fails to secure the win, he stands to lose the entirety of the personal fortune he has gambled on his political future. Adding a layer of domestic tension, his wife, Abigail-a therapist played by Kerry Washington-remains largely unaware of the precarious financial state her husband has created by draining their family savings to fund his run.

While kidnapping films often rely on predictable tropes, Animals distinguishes itself by grounding the tension in the reality of modern political desperation. Recent data from the Brennan Center for Justice highlights that the cost of local elections has skyrocketed, with mayoral candidates in major cities often spending millions to reach voters. This film captures that “win at all costs” mentality, showing how the desperation to maintain a public image can lead to moral compromises that threaten to destroy a candidate’s private life. By blending the high-pressure environment of a campaign trail with the visceral stakes of a thriller, the film offers a chilling look at what happens when a man’s ambition outpaces his integrity.

The Candidate: A Portrait of Modern Ambition
