Warning: This analysis contains spoilers for the film “Animals.”

The premise is a classic setup for a high-stakes thriller: a prominent, affluent figure faces a nightmare scenario when his child is snatched for a massive ransom. The protagonist finds himself in a precarious position, as his liquid assets are currently locked into a major business deal. The situation spirals into a complex ethical quagmire when it is revealed that the kidnapper mistakenly abducted the child of the wealthy man’s subordinate instead of his own. Ultimately, the protagonist is forced to confront his own conscience, choosing the path of moral integrity by personally delivering the ransom money.

If this plot sounds strikingly familiar, it is because it mirrors the narrative architecture of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 masterpiece, “High and Low.” While Ben Affleck’s recent Netflix project, “Animals,” was not explicitly marketed as a reimagining of the Japanese classic, the structural parallels are impossible to ignore. Critics, including /Film’s own underwhelmed “Animals” review, have pointed out that the film functions as an unofficial, modern-day adaptation of Kurosawa’s work.

Interestingly, the cinematic landscape has seen a surge of interest in this specific story. The Kurosawa influence is so potent that it was also the foundation for the 2023 collaboration between Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, titled “Highest 2 Lowest.” The fact that two major productions have drawn from the same well within such a short timeframe highlights the enduring power of the original film’s exploration of class, sacrifice, and corporate greed.

Kurosawa’s original film, based on Ed McBain’s novel “King’s Ransom,” remains a gold standard for the crime thriller genre. It masterfully balances the tension of a police procedural with a deep-seated character study regarding the cost of human life versus the value of a fortune. By transplanting this narrative into the modern streaming era, “Animals” attempts to modernize these themes for a contemporary audience, though it faces the daunting task of living up to the legacy of a legendary director.

In a recent discussion with Entertainment Weekly, the creative team behind the project shed light on the development process and the challenges of adapting such a high-stakes premise for today’s viewers.

The Moral Dilemma at the Heart of “Animals”
