The neon-drenched streets of Night City are officially making the jump from consoles to cinema. CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has confirmed a strategic partnership with Paramount Pictures to develop a live-action feature film rooted in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.

To ensure the project maintains the gritty, high-tech aesthetic of the source material, the studio is bringing in industry heavyweights. The production will be spearheaded by CDPR in collaboration with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the veteran producer renowned for his work on the Transformers franchise.

A Shared Vision for the Future of Cyberpunk

For CDPR, this collaboration represents a significant step in expanding their intellectual property beyond interactive gaming. Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, expressed enthusiasm regarding the alignment between the two companies. “We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise,” Nowakowski stated, noting that further specifics regarding the project will be unveiled as development progresses.

Building on a Proven Transmedia Strategy

This move into live-action is a natural evolution for the studio. CDPR has already demonstrated a successful track record in transmedia storytelling with the critically acclaimed Netflix anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Produced alongside the renowned animation house Studio Trigger, the series was a massive hit, with its second season slated for release later this month.

While the film project gains momentum, CDPR remains busy on the development front. The company has significantly scaled its operations, with a team of 513 developers currently dedicated to the next installment of The Witcher series. Simultaneously, the studio’s Boston-based team has officially entered the early stages of development for the highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.

The “Adaptation Effect” in Modern Gaming

The decision to bring Cyberpunk 2077 to theaters follows a broader industry trend where high-quality adaptations serve as powerful catalysts for player engagement. Data suggests that when a game is successfully translated to film or television, the original title often sees a massive resurgence in its player base.

For instance, industry analysts reporting for GamesIndustry.biz highlighted that cinematic projects-such as the Resident Evil film adaptations-have historically boosted player activity for Capcom’s titles by as much as 50% during release windows. Similarly, the massive success of Amazon’s Fallout series, which surged to become the sixth most-watched show in the platform’s history, proved that prestige television can introduce millions of new fans to a gaming franchise overnight.
