The lower bracket of VALORANT Champions Shanghai recently became the stage for two high-stakes survival stories. Both T1 and 100 Thieves successfully navigated their respective elimination series, securing 2-1 victories that sent Paper Rex and Nongshim RedForce packing while extending their own campaigns in the tournament.

The clash between T1 and Paper Rex was a rollercoaster of momentum. T1 drew first blood on Lotus, dominating with a 13-7 scoreline. However, Paper Rex responded with clinical precision on Ascent, forcing a decider by taking the map 13-6.

The final map, Summit, appeared to be a foregone conclusion in favor of Paper Rex. After establishing a commanding 9-3 lead at the half and securing the second-half pistol round, Paper Rex seemed poised to close out the series. Yet, T1 staged a remarkable defensive resurgence, clawing back to steal the map 13-11.

The catalyst for this comeback was Ham “iZu” Woo-Joo. As the only member of his squad to maintain a positive KDA throughout the final map, his performance was instrumental. Data from Sheep Esports highlights his impact, as he walked away with series MVP honors, boasting a 1.15 rating and an impressive 290 average combat score (ACS). This victory is a testament to T1’s resilience, especially considering their narrow path through the group stages, which left them with virtually no margin for error heading into the playoffs.

In professional VALORANT, the lower bracket is often described as the “long road home.” Unlike the upper bracket, where teams have the safety net of a second chance, lower-bracket matches function as do-or-die scenarios. Statistics from recent international VCT events show that teams who survive these “elimination gauntlets” often gain a unique psychological edge, having already faced the pressure of immediate tournament exit.

For T1, this win over a regional rival like Paper Rex is more than just a stat line; it is a momentum builder. As the tournament progresses, the ability to adapt mid-series-as seen in their comeback on Summit-will be the defining trait for any team hoping to hoist the trophy in Shanghai.

The Stakes of the Lower Bracket
