In a strategic move to cement its intellectual properties as cultural cornerstones, Xbox has officially unveiled a dedicated business unit titled “XP.” This new division is tasked with spearheading transmedia growth, aiming to translate the company’s massive gaming catalog into diverse entertainment formats-ranging from high-budget streaming series like Fallout to immersive, real-world experiences such as Minecraft theme parks.

The helm of this ambitious new venture will be held by Kayleen Walters. Walters brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the president of Mojang Studios. Her background is uniquely suited for this transition; prior to her tenure at Mojang, she spent eight years managing franchise development at Microsoft and over a decade at Lucasfilm, where she climbed the ranks to become vice president of franchise marketing and integrated planning.

With Walters moving to lead the XP division, Mojang Studios is set to welcome Maria Angelidou-Smith as its new president. Angelidou-Smith joins the team from Reddit, where she served as chief product officer, following a significant ten-year career at Facebook. This leadership shuffle follows the departure of former Mojang head Åsa Bredin, who stepped down earlier this year to pursue personal endeavors.

The XP division is structured to operate across four distinct operational pillars, each designed to maximize the reach of Xbox’s gaming portfolio:

* Xbox Pictures: Focused on the development and production of film and television adaptations.
This pivot reflects a broader industry shift toward “transmedia storytelling.” As gaming continues to dominate the entertainment landscape-with the global gaming market projected to reach over $300 billion by 2027-companies are increasingly looking to diversify revenue streams. By moving beyond the screen, Xbox is following the successful blueprints of competitors like Sony, which has seen massive success with The Last of Us on HBO and the Uncharted film, proving that gaming narratives have the potential to captivate audiences far beyond the traditional player base.

Leadership Transition and Strategic Appointments
