The Resilience of Traditional Gaming in a Live-Service Era

While Sony’s aggressive push into the live-service market has faced significant turbulence-marked by the cancellation of high-profile projects and the lukewarm reception of titles like Marathon and the scaled-back Horizon Hunters Gathering-one standout title continues to defy industry trends. Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 remains a beacon of stability, proving that a premium racing simulation can thrive through consistent, high-quality updates without relying on the traditional live-service model.

Surpassing Expectations: The Spec IV Milestone

Four years post-launch, the title is reaching a new zenith with the introduction of “Spec IV.” This massive content expansion serves as a testament to the game’s longevity. In a candid discussion with Traxion.gg, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that the current trajectory of the game was not part of the original roadmap. “Gran Turismo 7 is still continuing to sell very well, but we had not expected this from the beginning,” Yamauchi noted. He emphasized that the decision to keep pouring resources into the game is a direct response to a player base that refuses to shrink, instead showing consistent, organic growth.

Why Gran Turismo 7 Remains a Market Leader

The franchise’s endurance is backed by staggering figures; the series officially surpassed 100 million units sold last year, cementing its status as a pillar of the PlayStation ecosystem. Unlike many modern titles that suffer from “launch fatigue,” Gran Turismo 7 has utilized a steady cadence of updates to keep its community engaged. This strategy mirrors the success of long-running simulation platforms like iRacing, which maintain relevance through constant technical refinement rather than annual sequels.

The Spec IV update represents the most ambitious free expansion to date. By delivering substantial value-including the addition of six new vehicles and the highly anticipated Sugo racing circuit on October 14th-Polyphony Digital is effectively rewarding its loyalists while attracting new drivers to the track.
