A Cinematic Portrait of a French Icon: The De Gaulle Saga Arrives in the US

“One battle will seal our fate. You will lead it.” This stirring declaration anchors the newly unveiled US trailer for the ambitious two-part historical epic, De Gaulle. Following a successful debut at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and a strong theatrical run in France earlier this year, Samuel Goldwyn Films is bringing this sweeping biographical project to American audiences this autumn via a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release.

Antonin Baudry’s Dual-Film Vision

Director Antonin Baudry has crafted a massive undertaking, splitting the narrative into two distinct chapters: De Gaulle: Resistance and De Gaulle: Liberty. Known in their native France as Tilting Iron and The Sovereign Edge, these films provide a comprehensive look at the life of Charles de Gaulle-a figure whose legacy is so profound that millions of international travelers encounter his name daily at Paris’s primary international airport.

Rather than a standard biopic, Baudry’s approach functions like a historical tapestry, weaving together the personal and political stakes of the era. The films meticulously document the period between 1940 and 1945, capturing the transformation of a military officer into the architect of modern French democracy.

The Man Behind the Legend

For those unfamiliar with the historical weight of the subject, Charles de Gaulle was the quintessential statesman who refused to let France fall into total obscurity during the darkest days of World War II. As the leader of the Free French Forces, he stood in direct opposition to both Nazi Germany and the collaborationist Vichy regime. His efforts were not merely military; they were foundational. By chairing the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946, he successfully navigated the treacherous transition from occupation to the restoration of democratic governance.

Historical records indicate that de Gaulle’s influence was pivotal in maintaining French sovereignty during the Allied liberation. His ability to unify disparate resistance factions remains a masterclass in leadership, a theme that Baudry’s films aim to highlight through high-stakes drama and intense, period-accurate production design.
