While many fans are quick to voice their frustrations over rising prices and limited availability, there is a growing reality in the gaming market that might be even more concerning: the rise of the “empty” collector’s box. Santa Monica Studio has officially entered this peculiar arena, joining a list of major developers who are decoupling physical merchandise from the software itself.

PlayStation storefronts across Europe have begun featuring the God of War: Laufey Collector Box. For those curious about what this premium package entails, the contents focus heavily on physical memorabilia rather than digital access. The set includes:

This strategy mirrors recent industry moves, such as the GTA 6: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, which also famously omitted the actual game disc. This shift is becoming a standard practice for high-end merchandise bundles. By excluding the game, publishers argue they are preventing “double-dipping”-a scenario where loyal fans who already own the base game are forced to pay for a second copy just to acquire the physical collectibles.

However, the industry landscape is shifting rapidly. According to recent market data from GSD, physical game sales in major European markets have seen a steady decline, dropping by roughly 10-15% year-over-year as digital storefronts dominate. By selling these “collector boxes” as standalone items, studios can cater to the hardcore enthusiast market without worrying about the logistics of regional disc compatibility or the declining demand for physical media.

Unlike the GTA 6 release, God of War: Laufey remains available as a standalone physical disc for those who prefer traditional media. This creates a hybrid model: you can purchase the game separately and opt into the collector’s box only if the physical trinkets hold enough value for you. While some collectors lament the loss of the “all-in-one” box set experience, this modular approach offers more flexibility for players who want to curate their shelves without cluttering their libraries with redundant software licenses.
