Disney has officially confirmed that the live-action Moana movie is heading to its digital platform. Subscribers can expect the film to arrive on Disney+ on October 21.

This transition to streaming occurs roughly 90 days following its theatrical debut-a standard window for the studio. However, the rapid shift highlights broader concerns regarding the film’s underwhelming financial performance and has ignited internal debates at Disney regarding the long-term viability of its current live-action adaptation model.

The challenges for the live-action adaptation were evident from its opening weekend. The film struggled to gain momentum, posting figures that only marginally surpassed the lackluster debut of the studio’s Snow White project.

Ultimately, the film secured $162 million in domestic ticket sales, culminating in a total global haul of $323.6 million. To put this in perspective, it currently sits as the 16th highest-grossing film of 2026. When compared to the financial benchmarks set by previous hits like Aladdin or The Little Mermaid, the returns for Moana suggest a cooling audience interest in the “live-action remake” formula.

Beyond the balance sheets, the film became a lightning rod for social media discourse, with various memes circulating regarding the production’s aesthetic choices. The lukewarm reception has prompted candid responses from those involved in the project.

Dwayne Johnson, who returned to voice and portray the character of Maui, has been open about his disappointment regarding the film’s reception. His comments reflect a growing sentiment among industry analysts that audiences may be experiencing “remake fatigue,” forcing Disney to reconsider how it approaches its vast library of animated classics moving forward.

Financial Performance and Market Context
