As the spooky season approaches, Google has unveiled its annual “Frightgeist” report, highlighting the costumes capturing the most online attention this year. Among the eclectic mix of viral sensations and pop culture icons, a unique entry from the world of gaming has emerged: Verity, the unsettling character from the Minecraft-based horror series.

The Frightgeist index, which tracks real-time search trends to predict costume popularity, reveals a fascinating shift toward internet-native horror. While traditional costumes remain a staple, this year’s leaderboard is dominated by characters born from viral videos and indie web series. Leading the pack is Buddy the Unicorn, the central figure from Casper Kelly’s unsettling horror short, followed closely by Nikki, the breakout character from Curry Barker’s widely shared project, Obsession.

Securing the seventh spot on the list is Verity. For those unfamiliar with the lore, Verity originates from a chilling web series produced by ThatMob, set entirely within the blocky, familiar confines of Minecraft. The character is defined by a deceptively cheerful expression that slowly descends into psychological chaos. It is important to note that this digital entity is entirely unrelated to the recent Anne Hathaway film of the same name.

Data indicates that the fascination with this specific Minecraft antagonist is particularly concentrated in urban centers. According to Google’s metrics, the highest volume of searches for “Verity” costumes originated in Los Angeles, California, suggesting that the character’s aesthetic is resonating strongly with West Coast pop culture enthusiasts.

To get a better sense of the character’s eerie appeal, you can view the source material here:

Regional Interest and Search Patterns
