The recently released three-hour documentary, You Can See Everything, offers an exhaustive look at the rise and fall of Theranos and its disgraced founder, Elizabeth Holmes. While the film centers on Holmes’s deceptive corporate empire, audiences are leaving theaters with a lingering curiosity about a figure often relegated to the periphery: her husband, Billy Evans.

Unlike Holmes, whose face became synonymous with Silicon Valley fraud, Evans has largely managed to stay out of the intense media glare. For those who have watched the documentary or are planning to, the question remains: who is the man standing beside one of the most infamous figures in modern business history?

Before his life became intertwined with the legal and public fallout of the Theranos scandal, Evans lived a life far removed from the high-stakes drama of biotech startups. He hails from a prominent San Diego family, well-regarded for their long-standing involvement in the hospitality industry. Specifically, his family is recognized for managing a successful collection of family-owned hotels, which provided him with a background rooted in traditional business rather than the speculative tech world.

While Holmes was busy navigating the complexities of venture capital and regulatory scrutiny, Evans’s trajectory was defined by his upbringing in Southern California’s hospitality sector. Understanding his roots provides a necessary contrast to the chaotic, high-pressure environment that eventually defined his marriage to Holmes. As the public continues to dissect the aftermath of the Theranos trial-which saw Holmes sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison-the mystery surrounding Evans serves as a reminder of how personal lives often collide with public infamy.

The Background of Billy Evans: A Life Before Theranos
