The landscape of mobile technology is shifting from app-centric interfaces to agent-driven ecosystems. On October 13, the Tencent-backed AI startup StepFun officially unveiled the STEPX Neo, a device that fundamentally redefines how users interact with their smartphones. Priced at 3,999 yuan (approximately $560), this hardware represents a bold departure from traditional mobile computing by embedding artificial intelligence directly into the system architecture.

Unlike conventional smartphones where AI exists as a secondary, siloed application, the STEPX Neo operates on Step AOS 1.0. By integrating an AI agent named “Amoo” at the operating system level, the device gains the ability to navigate the phone’s environment with a level of autonomy previously unseen in consumer electronics.

To put this into perspective, consider the traditional process of booking a ride. Usually, you would manually launch a ride-sharing app, input your destination, select your vehicle type, and confirm the payment. With Amoo, the process is streamlined: you simply state your destination to the phone, and the agent executes the entire sequence of actions-from selecting the service to finalizing the booking-without requiring further manual input.

The launch strategy for the STEPX Neo is aggressive, with pre-orders currently live across major Chinese e-commerce platforms, including JD.com, Tmall, and Douyin. To incentivize early adoption, StepFun is bundling the device with a 12-month subscription to its AI services, providing users with a generous allowance of 100 billion tokens per month.

This launch arrives at a critical juncture for the Chinese tech industry. Following the friction experienced in December when major platforms blocked ByteDance’s Doubao phone agent, StepFun has taken a collaborative approach. The company has successfully secured partnerships with nearly 100 major service providers, including industry giants like Alipay and Tencent. This extensive network ensures that the Amoo agent can interact seamlessly with the apps that users rely on daily, effectively bypassing the compatibility hurdles that have plagued previous AI-integrated mobile attempts.

The industry is currently witnessing a race to define the “AI-native” smartphone. While global competitors are still experimenting with cloud-based AI features, StepFun’s move to bake the agent into the OS suggests that the future of mobile is not just about faster processors, but about software that can act on behalf of the user. As the market matures, the ability of these agents to navigate complex, multi-app workflows will likely become the primary benchmark for success.

Myriad: Which company will have the best AI model?
