Selecting the perfect name for a baby is often one of the most daunting tasks expectant parents face. With endless lists and shifting cultural trends, finding a moniker that feels both fresh and timeless is a challenge. However, professional naming consultants are now pointing toward a hidden treasure that is currently flying under the radar.

Colleen Slagen, a prominent baby name consultant widely recognized by her handle “namingbebe,” believes that parents are overlooking a name with immense potential. While many modern parents gravitate toward names that are already trending, Slagen is advocating for a name that currently sits at a staggering 6,250th place in popularity.

The name in question? Mamie.

According to insights shared with the Today Show, Slagen argues that Mamie possesses the charm and phonetic appeal to easily compete with current top 100 staples. Despite its vintage elegance, it remains remarkably rare in contemporary nurseries.

Data from the U.S. Social Security Administration’s list of baby names in 2025 highlights just how uncommon this choice is. In the most recent reporting period, only 19 families across the United States opted to name their child Mamie.

For parents who prioritize individuality, this low frequency is a major selling point. In an era where classrooms are often filled with multiple children sharing the same top-tier names, Mamie offers a distinct identity without sounding overly experimental or difficult to pronounce. As highlighted in her recent social media feature, Slagen believes the name is ripe for a resurgence.

Beyond its rarity, Mamie carries a rich history. Traditionally, it served as a sweet, affectionate nickname for names like Mary, Margaret, or the compound Mary-Margaret. Its versatility extends further, as it can also function as a charming diminutive for Marie, Marian, Marguerite, or even a combination like Matilda Marie.

The name itself carries the meaning of “pearl,” adding a layer of preciousness to its vintage appeal. Much like the current trend of reviving “grandparent names”-such as Sadie, Hazel, or Olive-Mamie fits perfectly into the aesthetic of classic, soft-sounding names that are making a comeback in the 2020s. If you are looking for a name that balances historical significance with a modern, lighthearted feel, Mamie might just be the “pearl” you’ve been searching for.

The Case for a Forgotten Classic
