### Why the New Street Fighter Film Misses the Mark

Attention, martial arts enthusiasts and arcade veterans: the latest Street Fighter cinematic adaptation has officially arrived in cinemas. While the film is currently facing a lukewarm reception from professional reviewers, dedicated followers of the franchise are still flocking to theaters to judge the experience for themselves.

#### A Visual Tribute with Narrative Flaws However, despite these aesthetic triumphs, the movie struggles to coalesce into a cohesive narrative. The pacing feels disjointed, and the storytelling lacks the polish required to elevate it beyond a standard action flick. The primary culprit for this lack of satisfaction is a fundamental misunderstanding of how to structure a fighting game adaptation.

#### The Tournament Problem This narrative misstep is particularly frustrating because it ignores lessons learned by recent genre peers. Much like the 2021 *Mortal Kombat* reboot, which also struggled to balance its expansive roster with a coherent tournament structure, this film fails to capitalize on the very premise that makes the franchise popular. In an era where video game adaptations-such as *The Last of Us* or *Fallout*-are finally finding success by leaning into their source material’s strengths, *Street Fighter* feels like a missed opportunity to deliver the definitive tournament epic fans have been waiting for.

It is impossible to deny that the production team put effort into honoring the source material. The film shines brightest during its stylized 2D animated flashback sequences, which capture the aesthetic of the classic games with stunning precision. Furthermore, the choreography is packed with fan-service moments, featuring iconic special moves and subtle easter eggs that reward long-time players.

At its core, *Street Fighter* is defined by the high-stakes drama of a global tournament. Yet, in this adaptation, the competition is relegated to the background, treated as a mere footnote rather than the driving force of the plot. By sidelining the tournament, the film loses the natural tension and character-driven progression that made the source material a global phenomenon.
