"Jimmy

From Short Film Concept to Feature-Length Nightmare

The Dutch cinematic landscape has produced a chilling new entry with Jimmy, a feature-length expansion of the 2018 short film Meet Jimmy. Directed by David-Jan Bronsgeest and penned by Tim Koomen, this project successfully transitioned from a festival-circuit short to a full-scale production. Following its initial 2024 debut in the Netherlands, the film is finally making its way to American audiences via a VOD release this autumn.

The Intersection of True Crime and Supernatural Terror

The narrative centers on a haunting premise: a convicted murderer named Jim who utilizes the medium of true crime podcasting to exact vengeance from beyond the grave. The story follows Dilara, a woman who returns to her hometown to mourn a childhood friend, only to find herself ensnared in a sinister audio mystery. As she delves deeper into the podcast, the boundaries between reality and the paranormal begin to dissolve, suggesting that the podcast itself acts as a conduit for the deceased.

This blend of modern digital obsession and classic slasher tropes mirrors the unsettling psychological tension found in recent genre hits like Red Rooms. Much like the way Red Rooms explored the dark corners of the internet, Jimmy taps into the current cultural fascination with true crime, turning the listener’s curiosity into a lethal trap.

Why Podcast Horror is Trending

The horror genre has increasingly turned toward audio-based storytelling as a source of dread. With the true crime podcast industry now valued at over $2 billion globally, filmmakers are finding that the intimacy of a voice in one’s ear provides the perfect foundation for psychological horror. Jimmy capitalizes on this by asking a terrifying question: what happens when the stories we consume start consuming us back?

The film features a compelling ensemble cast, including Rick Paul van Mulligen, Sonia Eijken, and Charlie Chan Dagelet, who bring a grounded, visceral intensity to the supernatural proceedings. As the trailer teases, the mystery of the killer’s missing body is only the beginning of the nightmare.
