After a storied legacy spanning over two and a half decades, the iconic North American esports powerhouse Evil Geniuses (EG) has officially confirmed it will be closing its doors. The organization, which famously secured the VALORANT world championship title in 2023, announced on Tuesday, October 20, that it will permanently halt all competitive and administrative functions effective November 2, 2026.

The decision to dissolve the organization comes as a significant blow to the industry. In an official correspondence, CEO Chris DeAppolonio highlighted that the organization reached this conclusion after exhaustive efforts to navigate an increasingly difficult economic climate. Despite implementing various internal restructurings over the past few years to streamline efficiency, the leadership team determined that the business model was no longer sustainable.

DeAppolonio pointed to two primary catalysts for the shutdown: the contraction of the sponsorship market and the ballooning expenditures required to maintain a top-tier competitive presence. This trend reflects a broader “esports winter,” where many organizations are struggling to balance the high costs of player salaries and travel with the reality of declining venture capital investment. Industry reports suggest that many teams are currently facing similar liquidity challenges as the initial hype of the mid-2010s gives way to a more rigorous demand for profitability.

With the organization’s impending closure, the immediate priority has shifted to the future of its competitive rosters and support staff. To ensure that talent is not left in limbo, Evil Geniuses has granted all players across its various divisions the freedom to engage in negotiations with other organizations immediately. This move is intended to facilitate a smooth transition for athletes and staff members as they seek new opportunities within the professional gaming ecosystem.

Financial Pressures and the Changing Esports Landscape
