At 100 years old, comedy icon Mel Brooks is leaving nothing to chance regarding his involvement in the highly anticipated sequel, Spaceballs: The New One. The legendary director and creator of the original Spaceballs took a proactive approach to production, insisting that his scenes as the wise-cracking Yogurt be captured immediately. His reasoning was as pragmatic as it was humorous: he wanted to guarantee his character’s presence in the film, regardless of what the future might hold.

Daphne Zuniga, who is returning to the franchise, shared the behind-the-scenes story during a recent appearance at 90s Con. According to reports from People, Brooks was deeply involved in the creative process with the writing team. Recognizing the realities of his age, he famously told the crew, “You better film me now because I’m 100.” The production team honored his request, prioritizing his schedule to ensure his iconic character was safely in the can.

The upcoming sequel serves as a bridge between generations, blending nostalgia with fresh talent. Zuniga is stepping back into the shoes of Vespa-now elevated to the role of Queen-while Bill Pullman returns as the roguish Lone Starr. In a meta-casting twist, Bill’s real-life son, Lewis Pullman, has been tapped to play their on-screen offspring, Prince Starburst. Furthermore, fans can celebrate the return of Rick Moranis, who is reprising his legendary role as Dark Helmet, once again flanked by George Wyner’s Colonel Sandurz.

The ensemble cast for the sequel’s cast also includes a powerhouse lineup of modern comedic actors, featuring Josh Gad as Mawg, Keke Palmer as Destiny, and Anthony Carrigan.

The promotional strategy for the film has been characteristically irreverent, leaning heavily into the tropes of modern blockbuster franchises. The team has already teased an 11-film slate for the Spaceballs Cinematic Universe, a direct jab at the current trend of endless interconnected sequels. Additionally, the marketing has highlighted a modernized, digitally enhanced Yogurt, complete with a set of shredded abs, proving that even a century into his life, Brooks’ commitment to satire remains as sharp as ever.

A Proactive Approach to Production
