While the official retail launch of the iPhone Duo is set for tomorrow, the tech world is already looking toward the horizon. Mark Gurman, the renowned Apple analyst and managing editor at Bloomberg, has bypassed the current hype to provide early insights into the development of both the iPhone Duo 2 and the iPhone Duo 3 during a recent episode of the Bloomberg “Power On” podcast.

Initial critical reception for the iPhone Duo has been largely positive, with Mashable Senior Editor Stan Schroeder describing it as the most innovative handset Apple has produced since the original model. However, the device has faced pushback regarding its biometric authentication method. After years of seamless integration with Face ID, many users are finding the return to a physical Touch ID fingerprint sensor to be a step backward in terms of convenience and modern workflow.

The frustration surrounding the current sensor may be short-lived. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is not standing still. Internal reports suggest that the company is already actively testing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2 that incorporate an under-display Face ID sensor.

This transition mirrors the industry-wide trend of moving toward “invisible” hardware, where sensors are hidden beneath the screen to maximize display real estate. With recent market data indicating that over 70% of premium smartphone users now prioritize edge-to-edge screen designs, Apple’s move to integrate Face ID directly into the display panel could be the defining feature that differentiates the next generation of the Duo series from its predecessor.

The Touch ID Controversy
