The creative force behind the acclaimed third season of “Star Trek: Picard,” showrunner Terry Matalas, recently provided fresh insights into the fate of the much-discussed, yet ultimately unrealized, spin-off project “Star Trek: Legacy.” During a guest appearance on the podcast “Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny,” hosted by franchise icons Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes, Matalas confirmed that the legendary Patrick Stewart was not only aware of the project but was enthusiastic about participating in a recurring, supporting capacity.

For those unfamiliar with the proposed narrative trajectory, Matalas envisioned “Star Trek: Legacy” as a direct continuation of the threads left dangling at the conclusion of “Picard.” The series was designed to center on the USS Enterprise-G, placing Seven of Nine-portrayed by Jeri Ryan-firmly in the captain’s chair.

The ensemble cast was set to feature a dynamic hierarchy, with Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) stepping into the role of First Officer, alongside Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher. This setup promised a blend of legacy characters and fresh faces, mirroring the successful formula that revitalized the franchise’s television presence in recent years.

Despite the overwhelming fan demand-which has seen petitions garnering tens of thousands of signatures across social media platforms-the project has yet to receive a green light from Paramount+. While the narrative potential was immense, the studio has opted to explore other avenues within the expansive Star Trek universe.

For a deeper dive into the conceptual framework of this unproduced show, you can read our comprehensive breakdown explaining what “Legacy” was going to be.
