While it was long believed that the impact of stress and eating spicy foods could cause digestive ulcers<\/a>, scientists now know that Helicobacter pylori<\/em> (H. pylori<\/em>) bacterial infections or long-term use of high-dose nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)\u00a0actually cause most cases.<\/p>\n

When H. pylori<\/em><\/a> causes the immune system to release inflammatory cells, or NSAIDs erode the stomach\u2019s protective mucosal lining, an open sore (aka an ulcer) is formed. \u201cOnce the protective wall erodes away, a pit forms, and that\u2019s where an ulcer is,\u201d says Matthew Hoscheit, MD<\/a>, a gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.<\/p>\n
