When analyzing the cinematic history of the Caped Crusader, the Joker stands as the undisputed champion of screen time. By 2026, the Clown Prince of Crime has terrorized audiences across nine distinct theatrical releases, brought to life by a diverse roster of eight different performers. While the Joker dominates the top spot, other iconic adversaries like the Penguin, the Riddler, and Catwoman follow closely behind.

Much of this longevity can be traced back to the 1966 *Batman* feature film, which capitalized on the popularity of the Adam West television series by uniting these four antagonists. Because they were established as the primary threats in that era, they have enjoyed a recurring presence in various adaptations for decades. However, there is a notable exception to this trend: a villain who bypassed the campy 1960s era entirely yet managed to secure a unique and impressive cinematic legacy.

That distinction belongs to Dr. Jonathan Crane, better known as the Scarecrow. While the character was famously considered for a role in the scrapped sequel to *Batman & Robin*-a project that would have reportedly featured Nicolas Cage as the fear-inducing doctor-he did not make his live-action debut until Christopher Nolan’s *Batman Begins* in 2005.

Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of the character offered a grounded, psychological take on the villain, marking a departure from the theatricality of previous Batman foes. Unlike the villains who relied on the 1966 foundation, the Scarecrow’s record is built on his ability to persist across different narrative arcs. In *Batman Begins*, Crane serves as a primary antagonist, and his survival at the conclusion of the film allowed him to maintain a lingering, haunting presence that few other secondary villains have achieved in the franchise’s history.

While the Joker’s record is defined by sheer volume, the Scarecrow’s record is defined by his unique trajectory. He represents a shift in how modern filmmakers approach comic book adaptations, favoring psychological depth over the cartoonish antics of the past. By successfully transitioning from a “what-if” scenario in the 90s to a cornerstone of the Dark Knight Trilogy, Scarecrow proved that a villain doesn’t need to be part of the original 1966 quartet to leave a lasting mark on the Batman filmography.
