For a significant stretch of time, Samsung championed the “invisible” camera aesthetic on its flagship book-style foldables. Beginning with the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021 and continuing through the Galaxy Z Fold6, the company utilized under-display camera (UDC) technology to provide an uninterrupted viewing experience. However, this trend hit a pause with the Galaxy Z Fold7, which pivoted to a traditional punch-hole cutout-a design choice that persisted through the recent Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and the standard Galaxy Z Fold8.

### A Strategic Reversion to Under-Display Tech Current reports suggest that the development of the Galaxy Z Fold9 is already well underway. The engineering targets are ambitious, aiming for an unfolded thickness of just 3.9mm and a folded profile of 7.9mm. To put this into perspective, achieving such thinness while housing complex camera sensors beneath the display is a massive feat of miniaturization, reflecting a shift toward prioritizing internal efficiency over external bulk.

### Competitive Pressure and the Apple Factor By reintroducing this technology, Samsung isn’t just revisiting an old feature; it is responding to the high-end expectations set by its primary competitor. While the industry has seen a move toward punch-hole cameras for better image quality, the aesthetic appeal of a truly bezel-less, hole-free screen remains a powerful selling point for premium foldable users.

### What to Expect

Recent industry whispers suggest that Samsung is preparing to revive its under-display camera integration for the next generation. A prominent leaker on X has indicated that the upcoming flagship will feature a UDC, paired with significant internal hardware overhauls, all while maintaining the sleek, slim profile users have come to expect.

The motivation behind this design pivot appears to be rooted in market competition. Samsung is reportedly positioning the Fold9 as a direct rival to the iPhone Duo. Since Apple’s entry into the foldable market famously debuted with a 4MP under-display selfie camera, Samsung is likely looking to reclaim its status as the innovator of the “all-screen” foldable experience.

While the prospect of a cleaner, more immersive display is exciting, it is important to view these early leaks with a degree of skepticism. Engineering challenges regarding light transmission and image clarity for under-display sensors remain a hurdle for all manufacturers. Nevertheless, if these reports hold true, the Galaxy Z Fold9 could represent a major leap in both form factor and display continuity.
