Players diving into the intense world of Phantom Blade Zero might notice a familiar tone emanating from the protagonist, Soul. In a surprising casting shift, the role is now voiced by industry veteran Roger Craig Smith, best known for his iconic portrayal of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Recent reports have confirmed that Smith has taken over the mantle from Jay Maksenuk, who previously voiced the character in early promotional materials and trailers for the title. While S-Game, the developer behind the project, has remained tight-lipped regarding the specific reasons for this late-stage substitution, the timing suggests the change occurred just as the game entered its final review phase. Consequently, players experiencing the game at launch are hearing Smith’s performance rather than the version featured in earlier marketing assets.

Roger Craig Smith is no stranger to high-profile gaming roles. Beyond his long-standing tenure as the Blue Blur, his vocal resume is extensive and diverse. He has brought life to legendary characters such as the charismatic Ezio Auditore in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the stoic Daigo Dojima in Yakuza Kiwami 3, and the gritty Alden Dorne in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. He even lent his voice to the Caped Crusader himself, Batman, in various media. If you ever find yourself in a position to interview him, be prepared for his high-energy personality-though you might want to keep the caffeine intake to a minimum to keep up with him.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MnqDEw4I_CI

Despite the behind-the-scenes adjustments, the game has enjoyed a massive reception since its release. The title has already cemented its status as a major hit, peaking at over 730,000 concurrent players on Steam. This impressive milestone highlights the community’s eagerness for the game’s unique combat style and atmosphere, regardless of the late-stage voice acting transition.

The Last-Minute Casting Shift
