A Spooky Surprise from the Derry Prequel

This past Halloween, HBO Max treated horror enthusiasts to an unexpected gift: a standalone prequel installment of “It: Welcome to Derry.” Titled “A Story of Derry,” this episode serves as an expanded deep dive into the foundational mythology previously hinted at during the fourth episode of the main series. By transporting viewers centuries into the past, the narrative peels back the layers of the town’s cursed history long before Pennywise became the face of local terror.

The Tragedy of the Western Wood

The narrative centers on Necina, portrayed by Kiawentiio (known for her work in “Avatar: The Last Airbender”). As a young member of the Shokopiwah tribe, Necina’s curiosity leads her into the treacherous Western Wood-a location strictly off-limits to her people. Her ill-fated hunting expedition serves as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking within the foliage. Much like the cautionary tales told to children to keep them from wandering into the dark, Necina and her companions quickly discover that the local legends regarding the malevolent force residing in the forest are not merely folklore, but a lethal reality.

Expanding the Stephen King Universe

While the episode functions primarily as a atmospheric expansion of the “Welcome to Derry” timeline, its true significance lies in the long-awaited live-action introduction of a pivotal figure from Stephen King’s broader literary universe: Maturin. In King’s original novels, Maturin is the Great Turtle, a cosmic entity and the ancient adversary of “It.” Seeing this character finally manifest on screen provides a massive payoff for fans who have spent decades analyzing the deeper, metaphysical connections within the “It” mythos.

Although the episode treads familiar ground regarding the established lore of the town, it succeeds in grounding the supernatural horror in a visceral, historical context. By shifting the focus from the modern-day Losers Club to the ancient origins of the entity, the showrunners have successfully broadened the scope of the franchise, proving that the evil in Derry has been hungry for centuries.
