There is a profound, almost ethereal quality to a handwritten note. As Frish Brandt, an expert in the craft and author of Unfinished Business: How to Write the Five Essential Letters of Your Life, aptly puts it, a letter lives beyond us, transcending the constraints of time and space. It functions much like a time capsule, preserving a specific moment of human connection long after the ink has dried.

Brandt identifies herself as a “letter midwife,” a unique title that captures her mission to assist others in articulating their deepest sentiments. In an era dominated by fleeting digital messages, many people feel a sense of hesitation when faced with the prospect of putting pen to paper. Brandt’s role is to guide individuals through this vulnerability, helping them find the right structure and vocabulary to express what is truly in their hearts. Whether you are struggling with a difficult confession or a simple expression of gratitude, she acts as a facilitator for your most important letters.

The origins of Brandt’s methodology are rooted in the profound environment of palliative care. While working in hospices, she witnessed firsthand how the act of writing could provide closure and peace. For many patients, the urgency of their situation made the need to communicate-to say “I’m sorry,” “I love you,” or “I forgive you”-paramount.

Today, she brings this expertise to a broader audience, including students at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. Her curriculum emphasizes that letter writing is not merely a lost art, but a vital tool for emotional health. Recent studies in expressive writing suggest that putting thoughts into a structured narrative can significantly reduce stress and improve psychological well-being, proving that the practice is as relevant today as it was in the past.

In a world of instant gratification, the deliberate pace of composing a letter offers a rare opportunity for reflection. Just as a gardener tends to a plant, a letter writer tends to their relationships. By choosing to document our thoughts, we create a legacy of our inner lives. Whether you are writing to a loved one or to yourself, the process of crafting a message is a transformative experience that bridges the gap between silence and understanding.

Defining the Role of a “Letter Midwife”
