Kani Releasing has officially dropped a fresh trailer for the 4K restoration of Rex: A Dinosaur’s Story (REX 恐竜物語), a Japanese cult classic that has remained largely inaccessible to Western audiences for decades.

A Historical Collision with Hollywood

The film’s original 1993 debut in Japan was famously ill-fated, as it hit theaters simultaneously with Steven Spielberg’s global phenomenon, Jurassic Park. While the latter redefined the blockbuster, Rex was quickly overshadowed. Beyond the box office competition, the production was marred by real-world drama; director Haruki Kadokawa was forced to step down from his studio following a high-profile legal scandal involving drug smuggling, effectively burying the film’s legacy for years.

What to Expect from This Cult Classic

The narrative follows Chie, portrayed by Yumi Adachi, who forms an unlikely bond with a baby Tyrannosaurus rex. The creature is discovered by her father, a paleontologist played by Tsunehiko Watase. Unlike the sleek CGI of modern creature features, this film leans heavily into the tactile charm of tokusatsu “suit-mation.”

The production boasts impressive pedigree, featuring creature designs by the legendary Carlo Rambaldi-the visionary behind the iconic aesthetics of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Alien. Viewers can expect a wild, genre-bending experience that blends:

High-Stakes Practical Effects: A mix of intricate puppetry and suit-based performance.

Eclectic Action Sequences: Thrilling chases involving everything from snowmobiles and horse-drawn carriages to hot air balloons.

Surreal Atmosphere: A unique juxtaposition of heartwarming dinosaur friendship and bizarre, festive holiday imagery.

Marketed as a holiday release, this restoration promises a viewing experience that is as eccentric as it is endearing. Whether you are a fan of 90s Japanese cinema or simply looking for a monster movie that defies conventional storytelling, Rex: A Dinosaur’s Story is a fascinating piece of film history that is finally getting its due.

» More Info >>>

Get ready to meet Rex!
