The vibrant Copenhagen underground scene recently suffered a significant blow when Drift Radio, a beloved community-focused station, fell victim to a targeted break-in at its Mimersgade headquarters. The incident, which occurred over the final weekend of October, resulted in the total loss of the station’s technical infrastructure.

A Significant Financial Setback

In an official statement released on Wednesday, October 28, the station’s organizers confirmed that intruders had cleared out their studio. The team estimates the value of the stolen gear to be between 90,000 and 120,000 DKK (approximately £10,000 to £13,500). Compounding the crisis, the station revealed that their insurance policy did not cover the stolen hardware, leaving them in a precarious financial position.

For independent media outlets, such a loss is often catastrophic. Much like a local bookstore losing its entire inventory to a flood, Drift Radio found its ability to broadcast and facilitate volunteer-led programming halted overnight. To put this into perspective, the cost of replacing professional-grade audio interfaces, mixers, and microphones-which have seen price hikes of nearly 15% globally due to supply chain fluctuations-makes recovery a daunting task for a non-profit entity.

Rather than remaining silent, the station immediately pivoted to mobilize its listeners. On October 29, the team replaced their standard programming schedule with a dedicated fundraising event. This shift highlighted the station’s deep roots in the Copenhagen music community, as supporters and local artists rallied to bridge the gap left by the theft.

“We’re asking you, our community, to help us raise the funds needed to replace our equipment so we can continue broadcasting and hosting volunteer-led and community-driven events,” the team shared in their appeal. They emphasized that every donation, regardless of size, serves as a vital lifeline for the station’s future.

Mixmag clothing capsules: Check out the collection at mixmag.shop

The response from the public has been swift and encouraging. According to follow-up statements issued by the station, the fundraising efforts have already yielded impressive results. By Monday, November 2, the collective contributions from listeners and supporters had exceeded 77,000 DKK (£8,500). While the station still has a way to go to reach their full replacement goal, the rapid influx of donations underscores the essential role Drift Radio plays in the city’s cultural landscape.

Rallying the Local Scene
