Since the iPhone Duo began shipping to early adopters, a common frustration has been the lack of software optimization for its unique dual-screen architecture. While many developers have been slow to update their interfaces, Google has finally stepped up. The latest iteration of the app, version 26.44.4, introduces comprehensive support for the device, ensuring a seamless transition between screens.

Although the official changelog in the App Store vaguely cites “bug fixes,” the actual user experience tells a different story. Previously, navigating with Google Maps on the iPhone Duo felt disjointed. On the outer display, the interface appeared awkwardly shifted to the left to accommodate the updated iOS dock. Meanwhile, the inner screen experience was even more limited; users were forced to pin the standard iPhone app to one side, leaving a significant portion of the expansive display unused-a wasted opportunity for a device designed for multitasking.

With this update, Google Maps now intelligently spans both screens. This shift is particularly beneficial for power users who rely on real-time traffic data and complex routing. By utilizing the full canvas of the inner display, the app can now show a broader map view, more detailed turn-by-turn directions, and a clearer list of alternative routes simultaneously, effectively turning the device into a high-end portable GPS unit.

For those considering the upgrade, the iPhone Duo remains a premium investment.
