Bristol’s Noods Radio Expands Reach with DAB+ Debut
Bristol-based independent powerhouse Noods Radio has officially entered a new chapter of its history. As of August 24, the station has made its inaugural leap into the world of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+), significantly broadening its terrestrial footprint across the city.
From Humble Beginnings to Digital Airwaves
For over ten years, Noods Radio has served as a vital platform for underground dance music. What began in 2015 as a grassroots project in a Stoke’s Croft living room has evolved into a cornerstone of Bristol’s vibrant music scene. The transition to DAB+ marks a major milestone for the station, allowing it to reach a wider local audience while maintaining its commitment to high-quality, niche programming.
Despite this expansion into local digital airwaves, the station remains dedicated to its global community. Listeners from around the world can continue to tune in via their online stream, ensuring that the station’s international reach remains as strong as ever.
A Cultural Hub on Cheltenham Road
The journey of Noods Radio is a testament to the power of community-driven media. After migrating through various local pubs and venues-including stints at Hamilton House and The Croft-the station established a permanent base at the music venue Mickey Zoggs in 2021. Today, the space functions as more than just a studio; it is a “cultural meeting point” that hosts community events and fosters local talent.
Reflecting on the station’s evolution, director Jack Machin described the move to DAB+ as a “surreal” achievement. “We started Noods in a living room because we wanted somewhere for people to share the music they cared about,” Machin noted. “Since then, we’ve broadcast from a pub, a room above The Croft, Hamilton House and finally a venue of our own on Cheltenham Road.”
The Future of Independent Broadcasting
The shift to DAB+ is particularly significant in the current media landscape. With digital radio listenership in the UK now accounting for over 70% of all radio listening, Noods Radio is positioning itself to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive digital environment. By securing a spot on the DAB+ multiplex, the station ensures that its unique curation of underground sounds is easily accessible to commuters and home listeners alike, further cementing its status as a pillar of Bristol’s cultural identity.
