Strategic Pivot: Guerrilla Games Shifts Horizon Multiplayer Strategy
Guerrilla Games, the powerhouse studio under the PlayStation umbrella, is currently undergoing a significant strategic shift regarding its upcoming multiplayer title, Horizon Hunters Gathering. Following lukewarm reception during internal playtesting sessions held earlier this year, the development team is reportedly pivoting away from the original live-service model.
Moving Away from the Live-Service Model
Recent insights from Bloomberg indicate that the studio is dismantling the live-service infrastructure that was initially central to the project. Instead of a persistent, ever-evolving online world, the title is being reimagined as a more contained, traditional multiplayer experience. This new direction will prioritize a dedicated story mode, moving away from the industry trend of “games as a service” that has seen mixed results across the gaming landscape-much like the recent challenges faced by other high-profile titles attempting to balance narrative depth with recurring online engagement.
Internal Deadlines and Resource Reallocation
During a recent internal briefing, leadership at Guerrilla Games informed employees that the project faces a critical evaluation period. The team has been given until December to demonstrate significant progress and hit key milestones that satisfy executive expectations. This high-stakes environment is further complicated by a broader restructuring of the studio’s workforce. A portion of the staff previously dedicated to Horizon Hunters Gathering is being transitioned to a mysterious new project, which is slated for its own performance review by the end of 2026.
The Scale of the Horizon Development Effort
While the exact headcount assigned to the project remains undisclosed, industry analyst Jason Schreier noted that the vast majority of Guerrilla Games’ resources have been funneled into this multiplayer endeavor for several years. This concentration of talent highlights the immense pressure on the studio to deliver a product that resonates with the core Horizon fanbase.
This pivot occurs against a backdrop of broader industry volatility. In 2024, Sony Interactive Entertainment implemented a reduction of 900 roles across its global PlayStation Studios division, citing the need to remain agile in a shifting economic climate. Guerrilla Games was among the studios impacted by these layoffs, adding another layer of complexity to the development of their upcoming slate.
