Saffron’s artist development programme for Black women and gender diverse music creators returns

Empowering Underrepresented Voices: Saffron’s EMERGING Programme Opens for 2026

The music industry has long grappled with systemic barriers that hinder equitable representation. To combat these disparities, the non-profit organization Saffron is once again opening doors for marginalized talent through its flagship initiative, EMERGING. This year-long artist development programme is specifically designed to provide a launchpad for Black women and gender-diverse music creators, offering a structured pathway to professional growth.

A Comprehensive Approach to Artist Development

Scheduled to commence in September 2026, the upcoming cycle of the EMERGING programme will select three promising artists to receive intensive, high-level support. Unlike standard workshops, this initiative offers a holistic experience that blends technical skill-building with personal creative exploration. Participants will benefit from:

  • Creative Retreats: Dedicated time and space to focus on songwriting and production away from the pressures of daily life.
  • Industry Mentorship: Direct access to seasoned professionals who provide guidance on navigating the complexities of the music business.
  • Financial Support: A dedicated bursary designed to alleviate the costs associated with recording, equipment, and music production.

Eligibility and Application Criteria

Saffron is committed to fostering talent within the South West of England, ensuring that the local creative ecosystem remains vibrant and diverse. To be considered for the 2026-2027 cohort, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Residency: Must be based in South West England for the duration of the programme (September 2026 – August 2027).
  • Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Identity: The programme is open to Black women, as well as Black non-binary, trans, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals (including those of mixed heritage).

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications before the cutoff time of 6:00 PM on Friday, July 31st. Full details regarding the submission process can be found on the official Saffron website.

A Proven Track Record of Success

The impact of Saffron’s work is best reflected in the achievements of its alumni. The programme has consistently acted as a catalyst for artists who have gone on to make significant waves in the industry. Notable graduates include the multi-talented producer and session bassist Marla Kether, who successfully debuted her EP ‘All That We Have’ via Saffron’s own record label in 2023. Additionally, the Bristol-based powerhouse Grove-known for their genre-defying approach to DJing and production-has utilized the platform to further their artistic trajectory.

Why This Work Matters

Recent data from the UK music sector continues to highlight a persistent gender and racial gap in production and technical roles. By providing resources to those historically excluded from these spaces, Saffron is not just mentoring individuals; they are actively reshaping the industry’s demographics. Following a successful 2023 fundraising campaign, the organization has solidified its commitment to sustaining these vital support systems. As the music landscape evolves, initiatives like EMERGING remain essential for ensuring that the next generation of creators has the tools, funding, and community necessary to thrive.
