The Strategic Pivot: Why Mobile Gaming Studios Are Migrating to PC
For years, Ustwo Games built its reputation on the foundation of highly tactile, premium mobile experiences. Titles such as the iconic Monument Valley, the meditative Assemble With Care, and the tactical Desta: The Memories Between cemented the studio’s status as a mobile-first powerhouse. However, the landscape of digital entertainment is shifting, and earlier this year, the studio confirmed a major strategic pivot: a transition toward a PC-first development model.
A Growing Trend Across the Industry
Ustwo is far from an outlier in this migration. The industry is witnessing a broader exodus as mobile-native developers seek greener pastures on desktop and console platforms. This trend is gaining significant momentum:
- FunPlus: In 2023, this mobile titan launched a comprehensive cross-platform initiative, porting major titles like Aniimo to PC and console environments to capture a wider audience.
- Outfit7: The creators of the Talking Tom franchise-a juggernaut that has surpassed 26 billion lifetime downloads-are actively expanding their footprint beyond handheld devices, prioritizing PC accessibility to sustain long-term growth.
Reflecting on Past Challenges and Future Efficiency
During a keynote address at the recent Develop conference, Ustwo Games CEO Maria Sayans offered a candid assessment of the studio’s evolution. She admitted that the shift toward PC development was a move that, in hindsight, should have been prioritized much sooner.
Sayans noted that a more decisive shift might have altered the studio’s trajectory regarding project management. “Some of our projects that never saw the light of day could’ve been killed sooner,” she explained. Reflecting on the difficult reality of the industry, she acknowledged that earlier strategic adjustments might have prevented the layoffs that affected four of the studio’s 30 staff members earlier this year. “For a team our size and one that has never done redundancies, it was really painful,” Sayans stated.
Adapting to a New Economic Reality
The move to PC is not just about platform preference; it is a response to the increasingly volatile mobile market, which has become dominated by aggressive free-to-play monetization models that often clash with the premium, boutique design philosophy Ustwo is known for. To navigate this transition while maintaining financial stability, Sayans has outlined a new operational approach. The studio plans to lean more heavily on a contractor-based workforce rather than expanding its full-time headcount, a move designed to provide greater agility and cost-efficiency in an unpredictable market.
