A Strategic Alliance: CD Projekt Red and Blizzard Join Forces
In a significant shift for the gaming industry, CD Projekt Red has officially forged a strategic partnership with Blizzard Entertainment. This collaboration kicks off with a major platform expansion: the highly anticipated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is set to arrive on Battle.net.
Expanding the Witcher Universe on Battle.net
Starting September 29, players will be able to access the remastered version of the iconic RPG directly through Blizzard’s ecosystem. This release is merely the opening act of a broader roadmap; the companies have confirmed that the upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, is slated to follow on the platform sometime next year.
“Integrating these titles into the Battle.net library represents the foundational step in our long-term cooperation with Blizzard,” a spokesperson for CD Projekt Red noted in the official joint statement.
Cross-Platform Perks: The Witcher Meets Sanctuary
The synergy between the two studios extends beyond simple distribution. To celebrate the partnership, Blizzard is introducing a special Diablo IV cosmetic set inspired by Geralt of Rivia. Players who secure the new expansion through the Blizzard store will gain access to this exclusive Witcher-themed armor and aesthetic, bridging the gap between the dark fantasy worlds of both franchises.
Navigating Corporate Shifts and Future Projects
This move marks a pivot for CD Projekt Red, which has spent the last several years heavily focused on the post-launch support and expansion of Cyberpunk 2077. The sci-fi title has seen impressive commercial success, recently crossing the 40 million units sold threshold since its December 2020 debut.
However, the studio’s internal landscape remains in flux. Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red confirmed a reduction in force, impacting nine developers previously assigned to Project Sirius, a multiplayer-focused Witcher title. While the company has invited those affected to apply for internal openings on other active projects, the restructuring highlights the studio’s ongoing efforts to balance its ambitious development pipeline.
What Lies Ahead?
While the current agreement focuses on the integration of existing Witcher content and cross-promotional cosmetics, the long-term scope of the deal remains speculative. CD Projekt Red has yet to clarify if this partnership will eventually encompass future flagship titles, such as the next installment in The Witcher series or the highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
For now, the industry is watching closely to see how this integration impacts player engagement across both platforms.
