The lead researcher behind the study, Fabiola Eto, PhD, a postdoctoral associate at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health at Queen Mary University of London, emphasizes the importance of these findings for clinical practice. “Our research revealed not just which complications show up, but how this wasn’t the same story for men and women,” Eto explains. “Knowing roughly when a complication is likely to happen – and for whom – could provide insights into preventing it.”

For instance, clinicians might prioritize early mental health screenings for female patients, while intensifying cardiovascular and renal monitoring for male patients shortly after their initial diabetes diagnosis.
