The Interconnected Nature of Psoriasis and Liver Health
The relationship between psoriasis and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) is far more complex than a simple cause-and-effect scenario. Rather than one condition triggering the other, researchers are increasingly identifying shared biological pathways-specifically the systemic activity of immune-signaling proteins known as cytokines-that predispose individuals to both chronic skin inflammation and metabolic impairment.
The Role of Cytokines in Systemic Inflammation
At the heart of this connection is the persistent release of inflammatory markers. According to Meena B. Bansal, MD, a professor of medicine and director of the MASLD/MASH Center of Excellence at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-17 play a dual role. While these proteins drive the skin lesions characteristic of psoriasis, they also disrupt hepatic lipid metabolism. When these inflammatory signals remain elevated, the liver’s ability to process fats is compromised, leading to the pathological accumulation of lipids within liver cells.
Beyond Inflammation: The Metabolic Syndrome Factor
While systemic inflammation is a primary driver, it is not the only culprit. Metabolic syndrome-a cluster of conditions including obesity, hypertension, and elevated blood sugar-acts as an independent risk factor for MASLD.
Recent clinical data suggests that patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis are significantly more likely to develop non-alcoholic fatty liver disease compared to the general population. This creates a “double hit” phenomenon:

Managing the Dual Burden
Because these conditions often coexist, dermatologists and hepatologists are moving toward a more integrated approach to patient care. Addressing psoriasis through systemic treatments may not only clear the skin but could potentially mitigate the inflammatory burden on the liver. Conversely, lifestyle interventions that improve insulin sensitivity and reduce body mass index (BMI) are essential for managing both the metabolic risks and the severity of psoriatic flares.
