Redefining Immersion: A Hands-On Look at Tecno’s Borderless Concept
For years, the smartphone industry seemed to hit a plateau regarding screen-to-body ratios, with manufacturers settling for slim, yet visible, black borders. However, at IFA Berlin 2026, Tecno reignited the pursuit of the “true” edge-to-edge display. We had the opportunity to go hands-on with their latest concept device, and it challenges everything we thought we knew about display design.
### Beyond the Illusion: How Tecno Achieved 0mm Bezels
At first glance, the device appears to be a seamless slab of glass. While the metal chassis feels slightly more substantial than your typical flagship, the visual impact is undeniable. You might wonder if Tecno simply hid the bezels beneath the frame, but the engineering reality is far more sophisticated.
To achieve this, Tecno moved away from traditional assembly methods. The device utilizes a dual-layer cover glass architecture. The lower layer is engineered to wrap around the midframe, effectively masking the inactive display circuitry and the standard black borders that usually frame a screen.
### Engineering the Impossible
The technical hurdles to reach a 0mm border are significant. To make this design viable, Tecno had to completely invert the standard screen assembly process, inserting the display module from the rear of the chassis. Furthermore, the front-facing second layer of glass is secured using a specialized, high-durability hot-melt adhesive, ensuring structural integrity without the need for a traditional plastic or metal bezel to hold the glass in place.

The result of this engineering is a level of immersion that feels genuinely futuristic. When navigating the UI or consuming media, content appears to spill over the sides of the device. It creates a “zoomed-in” effect, where the digital interface feels less like it is contained within a box and more like it is floating on the surface of the hardware.
To put this into perspective, when placed alongside an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the difference is striking. While the iPhone remains a benchmark for premium build quality, the Tecno concept makes even the most modern flagship displays look slightly dated by comparison.
