BYD’s Yangwang Prepares to Challenge Ultra-Luxury Sedans with New “Hu” Model
BYD is aggressively expanding the reach of its high-end Yangwang division. Following the success of its initial offerings, the automaker is now shifting its focus toward the ultra-luxury executive sedan segment. Industry insiders suggest this upcoming flagship vehicle is currently being developed under the internal codename “Hu.”
A Commanding Presence on the Road
Recent sightings of a heavily camouflaged prototype on Chinese public roads have provided our first glimpse of the vehicle’s imposing silhouette. True to its status as a premium executive transport, the sedan appears exceptionally long and substantial, signaling a direct challenge to established European luxury titans. While the heavy disguise obscures specific design lines, the sheer scale of the vehicle is unmistakable.
Design Cues and Dimensions
Early reports indicate that the “Hu” will borrow several aesthetic elements from the Yangwang U8, likely incorporating a bold, futuristic front fascia that aligns with the brand’s current design language. In terms of physical footprint, the sedan is expected to stretch approximately 5,500 mm in length, placing it in the same size category as the extended-wheelbase versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or the BMW 7 Series.
Perhaps the most striking feature observed on the prototype is the inclusion of rear-hinged coach doors. This design choice, famously associated with the pinnacle of automotive opulence like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, suggests that BYD is aiming to provide a chauffeur-driven experience that prioritizes ease of entry and an elevated sense of occasion for rear-seat passengers.
As BYD continues to capture a larger share of the global electric vehicle market-with the company recently reporting record-breaking quarterly sales figures-the introduction of the “Hu” represents a strategic move to solidify its reputation as a manufacturer capable of competing at the highest echelons of automotive luxury.
