Xbox Addresses GTA 6 Preorder Disparity Claims
Microsoft has officially pushed back against recent industry speculation suggesting that Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-purchase interest is disproportionately favoring the PlayStation 5 at the expense of the Xbox Series X and S ecosystem.
The conversation was ignited by journalist Tom Warren of The Verge, who, while discussing recent structural shifts and workforce reductions within the Xbox division, noted that the perceived gap in GTA 6 preorders was raising concerns regarding the long-term viability of the Xbox platform.
Microsoft’s Stance on Current Performance
In response to these claims, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball offered a firm rebuttal, emphasizing that the company is satisfied with the current trajectory of GTA 6 sales. According to Ball, internal metrics indicate that the volume of preorders on Xbox hardware is directly proportional to the brand’s existing footprint in the console market.
“Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of preorders to be matching our share of the console market,” Ball stated.
Market Context and Hardware Sales
The debate highlights a persistent challenge in gauging the “console wars”: the lack of transparent data from Microsoft. While Sony continues to provide regular updates on PlayStation 5 performance-with global sales surpassing 95 million units as of mid-2024-Microsoft ceased reporting specific Xbox Series X/S hardware sales figures several years ago.
Industry analysts frequently point to this data vacuum when assessing market health. Current market estimates suggest that for every Xbox console sold, Sony is moving at least two PlayStation 5 units. By aligning their preorder data with this established market share, Microsoft is essentially arguing that their performance is not a sign of platform decline, but rather a reflection of the current hardware install base.
As anticipation for Rockstar Games’ latest blockbuster continues to build, the industry remains focused on how these massive titles influence hardware adoption rates heading into the holiday season.
